Syrah

Franse blauwe druif met als bakermat de Noord-Rhône – Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas – die zich de afgelopen decennia ontpopt heeft als populaire wereldburger. In Australië is hij onder de naam shiraz zelfs de officieuze nationale druif. Wijn van syrah heeft vaak de geur en smaak van zwart fruit, peper, rook, zoethout en leer. Ook heeft hij aardig wat tannine en zuren, met het bijbehorende vermogen tot rijping. In Australië en ook Zuid-Afrika geeft men vaak de voorkeur aan een zwoelere stijl; in Nieuw-Zeeland en Californië neigen wijnmakers eerder naar de Europese stijl. In Europa is syrah buiten de Rhône onder meer te vinden in de Languedoc, al dan niet in blends met grenache en mourvèdre, en in landen als Spanje en Italië.
